Freedom by Design: Why Choosing Simplicity Can Be the Smartest Business Decision
Growth has always been seen as the ultimate goal.
But what if building a successful business isn’t about adding more—it’s about intentionally doing less?
In Episode 74 of The Growth Equation, Tristan Wright sits down with Dave Lawson, Founder and Creative Director of Design People, to share his journey from award-winning advertising agencies to building a business designed around creativity, flexibility, and freedom.
Success Doesn’t Have to Mean Scaling
Early in his career, Dave followed the traditional path of success. He worked for leading advertising agencies, won industry awards, built teams, and eventually grew his own creative business.
On paper, everything looked like it was moving in the right direction.
Behind the scenes, however, the long hours, constant pressure, and responsibility of managing people led to burnout. After experiencing severe exhaustion and later navigating major life changes, including COVID and divorce, Dave made a decision that many business owners wouldn’t expect.
Instead of growing bigger, he simplified.
He returned to working as a solo creative, collaborating with trusted freelancers when needed and designing a business that gave him more control over his time, his creativity, and his wellbeing.
Build the Business That Fits Your Life
One of the most valuable lessons from the episode is that success doesn’t have a universal definition.
For some entrepreneurs, building a large team is the dream.
For others, success means having the flexibility to pick up the kids from school, work with clients they genuinely enjoy, and spend more time doing the work they’re passionate about.
Dave realised that his greatest value wasn’t in managing people—it was in creating exceptional design. By focusing on his strengths instead of chasing traditional growth, he built a business that aligned with both his professional goals and his personal priorities.
Trust Yourself and Trust the Process
Dave also reflects on the importance of backing yourself as a business owner.
Whether it was leaving agency life, rebuilding his business after difficult partnerships, or redefining success on his own terms, every major decision came back to trusting his instincts.
His advice is simple: don’t build the business you think you’re supposed to have. Build the one that allows you to do your best work and enjoy the life you’re creating along the way.
